General Information

What is HVAC?

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It is a system that controls the temperature, humidity, and air quality in indoor spaces. HVAC systems are commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to provide occupants with a comfortable and healthy environment. The heating component of an HVAC system is used to raise the temperature of a space, while the air conditioning component is used to lower the temperature. Ventilation is used to circulate fresh air and remove stale air and pollutants. HVAC systems can be complex, including ductwork, filters, thermostats, and refrigerant systems.

Repair

How long will it take to install or repair my HVAC system?

When it comes to repairing your HVAC system, the time it takes can vary depending on the specific issue and the availability of parts. At Mountain Heating and Cooling, we strive to provide efficient and prompt service to our customers. Our team of skilled technicians will assess the problem and provide you with an estimated repair timeline. In many cases, minor repairs can be completed within a few hours, while more complex issues may require additional time. Rest assured that we understand the importance of a functioning HVAC system and will work diligently to get your system up and running as quickly as possible.

What should I do if my HVAC system stops working in the middle of the night?
  1. Check the thermostat: Make sure the thermostat is set to the correct temperature and is functioning properly. If the thermostat is not working correctly, it could cause the HVAC system to malfunction.
  2. Check the air filter: A clogged air filter can cause the HVAC system to stop working. If the filter is dirty, replace it with a new one.
  3. Check the circuit breaker: Check the circuit breaker for your HVAC system to ensure it has not tripped. If it has, reset it and see if the system starts working again. You can turn off the breaker for 5 minutes and then turn it on again to clear any codes.
  4. Enact your backup plan. Systems are not perfect and often break down at the most inopportune time. We recommend having backup heaters or a fireplace to cover your needs if the system stops working.
  5. Call us! Leave us a message and our team will call you first thing in the morning.
How can I prevent HVAC problems in the future?
  1. Change your air filters regularly: Dirty air filters can restrict airflow and cause the HVAC system to work harder than it needs to, leading to breakdowns and other problems. Change your air filters regularly, typically every 1–3 months, depending on the type of filter and usage.
  2. Schedule regular maintenance: A professional HVAC technician can inspect and clean your system to ensure it operates efficiently and identify any potential issues before they become significant problems. Annual Performance Tune-Ups are included in our annual memberships.
  3. Keep the area around the HVAC unit clean: Make sure the area around your HVAC unit is clear of debris, leaves, and other materials that can restrict airflow and cause damage to the unit.
  4. Use a programmable thermostat: A programmable thermostat can help regulate temperature and reduce energy waste, which can extend the lifespan of your HVAC system.
  5. Avoid overworking your HVAC system: Make sure your registers and grills are open and free-flowing. Blocked grills contribute to higher electrical use in the system and cause premature motor failures in addition to making the home uncomfortable.
Do you offer emergency HVAC services?

Can you provide references from previous HVAC installations or repairs?

We are happy to provide customer references on their experiences with our team from their heating and cooling installations. We also understand that this is a favor being requested of our clients and may take a little time to coordinate with them.

How often should I get my HVAC system serviced?

Having your HVAC system tuned up once a year for heating and once a year for cooling is recommended. If you only have a heating system that means once a year will keep it running smoothly. Annual Performance Tune-Ups help the system operate efficiently and effectively and can help identify potential issues before they become breakdowns.

Having routine and consistent tune-ups can reduce the need to have your system serviced at peak times. Moving your performance tune-up to a non-peak month can also save $$$ on your membership. Our professional HVAC technicians will inspect and clean the various components of your system, replace any worn or damaged parts, and perform any necessary repairs to ensure that your system is functioning correctly.

If you notice any issues with your HVAC system, such as strange noises, reduced airflow, or decreased heating or cooling performance it is essential to have it serviced as soon as possible to prevent further damage or potential safety hazards.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

The frequency at which you should change your furnace filter depends on a few factors, such as the type of filter you have, the number of people and pets in your home, and the level of air pollution in your area.

Use your filter thickness as a guideline:

  • 1” and 2” thickness = replace monthly
  • 4” and 5” thickness = replace every 3 months
  • Carbon-coated filters are great for odor removal (pets, forest fires) and can be ordered by the case for all sizes of filters.
  • All guidelines are based on our manufacturer’s guidelines.

It is essential to check your filter regularly, especially during periods of heavy use, and replace it when it appears dirty or clogged. A dirty filter can reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system, increase energy costs, and reduce indoor air quality, so it is crucial to keep it clean and replace it as needed.

Ask us about our membership options, so you don’t have to remember to replace filters on time. We can do it for you!

Cost

How much does a new furnace cost?

The cost of a new furnace can vary depending on factors such as the size and type of furnace, the brand, and the location. There are always some published averages on the internet that are misleading. It’s important to remember that the options you want to be included in your comfort system and the physical conditions of your home make providing an average installation cost a guessing game.

The size of the furnace is typically measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) and the cost can increase as the size and heating capacity of the furnace increases. The features of the furnace can also affect the cost, with variable capacity and multi-stage gear being more expensive. The brand can also affect the cost, with some brands being more expensive than others due to factors such as reputation, features, and warranties.

In addition to the cost of the furnace itself, installation costs should also be taken into account. This can vary depending on factors such as the complexity of the installation, the location, and the contractor.

We believe it is our duty to provide a detailed proposal based on your specific needs and circumstances. Our home evaluation is exhaustive and accurate so that we can guarantee our furnace sizing is adequate for your needs.

How much will it cost me to run my air conditioner?

The cost of running your air conditioner will depend on several factors such as the size and efficiency of the unit, the local climate, the temperature you set the thermostat to, and how frequently you use the system.

To estimate the cost of running your air conditioner, you can use the following formula:

Cost per Hour = (Watts ÷ 1000) x Electricity Rate

The watts of your air conditioner can usually be found on the unit’s label or in the owner’s manual. The electricity rate is the cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) that you pay for electricity. This can be found on your electricity bill.

For example, if your air conditioner is rated at 1,200 watts and you pay $0.12 per kWh for electricity, the cost per hour to run your air conditioner would be:

Cost per Hour = (1,200 ÷ 1000) x 0.12 = $0.144 or approximately 14.4 cents per hour

If you run your air conditioner for 8 hours per day, the daily cost to run your air conditioner would be:

Daily Cost = Cost per Hour x Hours per Day = $0.144 x 8 = $1.152 or approximately $1.15 per day.

Keep in mind that these are estimates and that the actual cost of running your air conditioner will depend on the factors mentioned above.

Do you offer financing options for new HVAC systems?

Yes, we offer a Wells Fargo Home Projects credit card, which includes a revolving line of credit that you can use again and again. This helps with convenient monthly payments that fit your budget.

What kind of payment options do you accept?

In addition to our financing options, Mountain Heating and Cooling accepts all major credit/debit cards and checks.

What rebates and tax credits are available for my cooling or heating upgrades?

Rebates and tax credits can come from a variety of sources.

Rebates:

  • Federal and State rebates are often available as well as the occasional utility provider rebate.

Tax Credits:

We like the term proposal as it implies our commitment to providing you with a quality service and installation that is comprehensive and limits your exposure to unknown costs, fees, or any other surprises along the way.

Air Conditioning

Can I add Air Conditioning to my home?

Yes, it is possible to add air conditioning to your home even if it was not originally designed with it. However, the process of adding air conditioning will depend on a few factors such as the size and layout of your home, the type of air conditioning system you want to install, and the existing ductwork and electrical infrastructure.

There are a few different types of air conditioning systems that can be installed in a home, including central air conditioning, ductless mini-split systems, and window or portable units. Each of these systems has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the type that is best for your home will depend on factors such as your budget, the size of your home, and your cooling needs.

To add air conditioning to your home, give us a call so we can evaluate your home and recommend the best system for your needs. We can perform a home evaluation and a proposal for the installation costs and any necessary modifications to your home’s infrastructure.

Is there a DIY air conditioning option?

While there are some DIY air conditioning options available, they are generally not recommended unless you have experience and training in HVAC installation and repair. Installing an air conditioning system can be complex and requires specialized tools and knowledge, and incorrect installation can lead to safety hazards, reduced performance, and potential damage to the system or your home.

That being said, there are some smaller, portable air conditioning units that can be purchased and used without professional installation. These units typically require an electrical outlet and a way to vent the hot air outside, such as a window or a venting kit. However, portable air conditioning units may not be as effective or efficient as a professionally installed system, and may only be suitable for small spaces or occasional use.

It is generally recommended to work with a licensed HVAC contractor to install or repair an air conditioning system, as they have the training, experience, and tools needed to ensure that the system is installed and functioning properly.

Do In-Home Window Air Conditioners Work?

Yes, in-room window air conditioners can be an effective and efficient way to cool a single room or small space. These units are typically installed in a window and use a compressor and refrigerant system to cool the air, which is then blown into the room through a fan.

One advantage of in-room window air conditioners is that they can be more affordable and easier to install than a central air conditioning system, making them a popular choice for renters or for those who do not want to make significant modifications to their homes.

However, in-room window air conditioners may not be as efficient as a central air conditioning system, and may only be suitable for cooling a single room or small space. They may also be noisier than central air conditioning systems and may block or restrict the view from the window where they are installed. In many cases they also need to be taken out each fall and re-installed in the spring in our colder Montana climate.

Overall, in-room window air conditioners can be an effective cooling solution for small spaces or for those on a budget, but it is important to select a unit that is the appropriate size for the space and to ensure that it is installed and maintained properly.

I have radiant boiler heat. Can I add air conditioning?

Yes, it is possible to add air conditioning to a home with radiant boiler heat. One option is to install a ductless mini-split system, which can provide both heating and cooling without the need for ductwork.

Ductless mini-split systems consist of an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handlers that can be mounted on the wall or ceiling. The indoor units are connected to the outdoor unit by a conduit that houses the refrigerant lines, electrical wiring, and drainage pipes.

The indoor air handlers blow cooled air into the room, and can be controlled individually to provide zoned cooling throughout the home. Ductless mini-split systems are highly efficient and can provide both heating and cooling without the need for ductwork, making them an ideal solution for homes with radiant boiler heat.

To install a ductless mini-split system, you will need to work with a licensed HVAC contractor who can evaluate your home and recommend the best system for your needs. They will also be able to provide a proposal for the installation costs and any necessary modifications to your home’s infrastructure.

Should I cover my air conditioner in the winter?

Covering an air conditioner during the winter can help protect it from snow, ice, and debris that may accumulate on or around the unit. However, whether or not you should cover your air conditioner depends on several factors, including whether you can remember to uncover it before turning it on in the spring.

It’s recommended to consult with a licensed HVAC contractor to determine whether or not covering your air conditioner is necessary and to get recommendations on the best type of cover to use for your specific unit and climate.

Heating & Furnaces

What kinds of furnaces are available?

A wide variety of furnace features are available. We have fine tuned the offerings to our climate and come up with three main categories to consider. All three are available in 95% efficiency as well as 80% efficiency options. These options are also available in Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps and are ideally paired with matching functions on the furnace.

One:
Variable Capacity (gas valve actuates from 30% to 100%) paired with a Variable Speed (again 30% to 100%) fan is the best of the best for efficiency and comfort. Whether you are considering ductless or a traditional ducted approach, this method of delivering comfort to your home is a quieter, lower fuel consumption option.

Two:
Two-stage (gas valve actuates at high fire and low fire) paired with a Variable Speed fan. This option allows the system to operate with lower fuel consumption and lower fan noise/system noise during the times when the heat load on the home is not a peak load.

Three:
Single-stage gas valve with a single-stage fan. This is a solid budget-conscious choice when needing to provide heating or cooling to the space.

Can a Minisplit help heat my house?

Yes, a mini-split system can be used as a heating source for your home. Mini-split systems are heat pumps that can provide both heating and cooling, making them a versatile and efficient option for home heating and cooling.

What is the best thermostat for my furnace?

There are several types of thermostats available for use with furnaces, and the best one for your furnace will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Here are some common types of thermostats: Manual thermostats, Programmable thermostats, and Smart Thermostats.

Is it safe to have a gas furnace in my house?

Overall, gas furnaces can be a safe and effective way to heat your home, but it’s important to take appropriate safety precautions and work with a licensed HVAC professional to ensure that your furnace is properly installed and maintained.

What is a more efficient heating source: gas or water?

Either can be effective. The most important concept to remember is that each type of system requires the use of a medium. And, when done poorly the medium can actually work against you.

The upside of water heating or radiant heating is that the system requires the use of the materials of the home to play an important role in heating the home. This is often considered a “cozy” feeling by people who prefer radiant systems because the surfaces of the home are warm. However, the insulation, windows, construction detailing, etc. all become very important in radiant systems due to the need for the contractor building the home to be a specialist in building for radiant heat. When done poorly, the building walls, foundation, roof, joints, etc. become a transfer highway for energy from the home to the outdoors. When done correctly, homes are comfy and cozy.

There are a few upsides of air as a medium. We can deliver purified, conditioned, and humidified air through clean ducts into a home tailored to fit the comfort needs of the client. Like a radiant system, there are a few things that need to be aligned before we can effectively do this. First, proper duct design allows the air to efficiently and effectively fill the home for comfort, reduces system noise, and reduces wear and tear on the furnace. Then, a duct system should be sealed to be sure that contaminants are not coming into the duct system and all the energy put into the duct system stays there until the delivery point in the room. Humidification is added to condition the home for dryer winter months. A complete air purification system will capture, kill, and collect contaminants, dander, pollen, dust and kill bacteria and viruses throughout the home. While some of these may not seem to affect efficiency, they all play a part in providing comfort in an efficient way. We may be biased, but we wouldn’t settle for a noisy, dirty duct system because that means that any one of these things hasn’t been done.
